A Creative Education

On the 21st of May this year there was a D&AD President’s Lecture entitled ‘A Future for Creative Education?’ With the A level results out today it seems a good time to revisit the themes within. The panel, which included Lord David Puttnam, D&AD President Neville Brody, Emily Campbell of the Creative Education Trust and David Erixon from Hyper Island, was unanimous in supporting the value of a good creative education, both for the individual practitioner and for the nation as a whole.   As mentioned previously I have a lot of time for the panel but Brody especially. I...

The end of Brand Hollywood?

Ricky Gervais punctures the Hollywood bubble at the Golden Globes. Let's be clear about this, Gervais is a cult. A marmite. You either love him or hate him, you either get him or you don't. He either aggravates or deflates in equal measure. Those who are offended probably lack the self awareness of where the entertainment industry actually is, the sound of bubbles bursting is long overdue.

Brody: Genius or Wanker

For those who can remember Neville Brody breaking onto the design scene he's always been admired and derided with equal measure, though always with grudging respect from his detractors. This Q & A seeks to determine which one the man behind the ego and the goatee is...

Philippe Starck raving?

I’ve waited before the series is over before thinking about this one. As you may know ‘Design for Life’, a reality show for product designers has run its course on BBC2. If you missed it then there’s a handy section of iPlayer waiting for you right now. The show has been hosted and dominated by the considerable ego and talents of product design legend Philippe Starck. The carrot at the end of the series being a 6 month stint in his Paris studio. To be fair it is a great prize, do well and it could be an incredible springboard to a luminous design career. It’s...

Badscience Vs the Lord

Badscience Vs the Lord

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the debate between Ben Goldacre (of Badscience fame) and Lord Drayson, Minister for Science. Chaired by Simon Mayo (yes of the BBC) the statement posed was: Bad science reporting: is it bad for your health? Lord Drayson went first. His argument is that we do have an awful lot to celebrate in science reporting, yes there have been disasters in the past (BSE, MMR) but the standards are rising. We cannot afford to be complacent, it is a virtuous circle. He argued that across today’s media landscape you need a mix of sensation and accuracy. Good...

Creativity is the answer

Great piece by Jim Prior of The Partners on madcomments.co.uk regarding creativity in business. He highlights the usual lip-service that happens when you sit down a businessperson and subject them to a survey. Yes they say creativity is important, after all they’re hardly going to say it isn’t – that would be so un-cool, so un Apple, Virgin, Google, Nike, Sony, YouTube etc – all they people they want to be without the commitment and effort that takes. Though when asked to truly understand what’s asked and act on it they come up short. For the vast majority of...
